Development
Interest in women's football has been growing in recent years at a rate reminiscent of Vivianne Miedema's rising goal tally. That is why former VI journalist Ramon Min and database expert Laurens Valentin have once again joined forces to build a comprehensive database on the 'Orange Lionesses', the team that made its definitive breakthrough in 2017 by winning the European title on home soil.
This new database follows the same structure and design as fcgstats.nl, Laurens' project that started it all, and the earlier projects that the duo subsequently realised together: messistats.com and psvstats.nl.
Sources
The Oranjestats database contains data from more than five hundred international matches played by the 'Orange Lionesses' since 9 November 1973, the day of their very first official match under the KNVB banner. All international matches include line-ups, substitutions and goal scorers. Where possible, assists have also been added, as well as information about the type of goal and how it was scored.
This wealth of detail has been drawn from a wide range of sources: from newspaper archives and online articles (including NU.nl, NOS and national media) to match documentation on Onsoranje.nl and various live score platforms. In addition, dozens of websites of foreign football associations have been combed through to find as many referees and spectator numbers as possible.
Because we want to present more data than can be found anywhere else, a lot of time has been spent enriching existing information. By combing through match reports and reviewing footage, we have managed to assign assists to players from 2010 onwards, something that has never been done so comprehensively before.
During this intensive search, it also became clear that the women's team received hardly any media attention in its first thirty years. As a result, crucial details about many matches are missing, such as who made the decisive pass or which referee officiated. We are in contact with various former international players to fill in these gaps: from previously unrecorded dates of birth to all the players who ever wore the captain's armband.
The data in the database is maintained with the utmost care, but errors can never be completely ruled out. Feedback and additions are therefore always welcome.
